Safari Overview

Nyerere National Park, formally known as Selous Game Reserve, is Africa’s largest and oldest game reserve. The Selous’ beauty of the park is matched by the quality of a safari with its widest diversity of safari activities, Nyerere Park covers 50,000 square km and is among the largest protected areas in Africa and relatively undisturbed by humans, Selous is rich in elephant, cheetah, giraffe, hippos and crocodile, and many other species. Our safari starts at 04:30 AM at this extraordinary Park. 

Routine

Safari Itinerary

Day 1

Dar es Salaam – Nyerere and Game Drive

Start at 4:30 AM from the hotel or airport at Dar Es Salaam and drive to Nyerere National Park formally Selous Game Reserve. The day will be spent on game viewing in the Game Reserve.

The safari guide will point out rare species of animals like wild dogs, Sabie antelopes, black rhinoceros, Nile crocodile, hippopotamus along the banks of the Rufiji River, Cape buffalo, hartebeest and eland. Picnic lunch and drinks will be served in the wilderness before heading back to camp, dinner, and overnight will be at Jimbiza Tented Camp.

Day 2

Boat tour, then drive back to Dar es Salaam

After breakfast at 7 AM, start the boat trip. Usually, the boat trip leaves camp at 07:30 AM and returns at 9:00 AM. It’s an ideal trip and you will enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Rufiji River with many hippos, crocodiles, and beautiful birdlife. The sunrise can also be stunning from the boat. There is nothing quite like the serenity of the river while the sun dips below the horizon. The Rufiji is a large wide river with several lakes branching off it for you to explore, gaining a unique view of the river’s largest inhabitants: crocodiles and hippos.

Boat safaris are also the best excursions for bird enthusiasts. The Selous has over 350 bird species, and the river is the place where they congregate in great numbers and are easily seen in the open environment. You might also want to try your luck with the ferocious tigerfish, and weighty catfish that live in the waters in abundance.
Then, prepare for a safari back to Dar es Salaam at the hotel, airport, or ferry.
